Ordinarily, one must live in Japan in order to play Touken Ranbu. However, it is still possible to play the game by either using a proxy connection or faking the region flag. The browser cookie method below does the latter, allowing you to play the game. Kindly note that all of these methods should be used at your own risk. We shall hold no responsibility should any of the following methods causes your account to be banned.
Note: If you have previously installed plug-ins to bypass the region lock (such as KC3) for other netgames on DMM (e.g. Kancolle) there is no need to overwrite said plug-in with this cookie.
Please consider installing the Touken Ranbu ONLINE (Smartphone App) smartphone app if you want to play on a tablet or smartphone device.
Option 1: Using VPN[]
If you have tried the cookie method and it did not work for you, you might have to clear cookies to try on VPN, or else you will still get a region locked error.
Usage[]
Please choose one of the following options for VPN:
SoftEther VPN Client + VPN Gate Plugin - VPN Gate Client download Tutorial from VPN Gate website
- Extract the .zip to a folder, open the .exe file to install client+plugin.
- Login to DMM's website first. (Recommended)
- Open SoftEther VPN Client and choose "VPN Gate Public VPN Relay Servers".
- In the new window, you can sort the servers by region (e.g. Japan), choose the ones with the smallest ping.
- Choose "Use UDP Protocol" and click OK.
- Go to http://pc-play.games.dmm.com/play/tohken/ and wait until the game startup screen shows.
- Go back to VPN Client, right-click "VPN Gate Connection" and click "Disconnect".
SetupVPN - Website
- Install SetupVPN.
- Create an account. After you have successfully created the account, check your e-mail for verification (check Spam folder if it's not in your Inbox).
- Log in to SetupVPN. Do not turn on the VPN yet.
- Log in to DMM via this link. After it loads, go to your SetupVPN and change location by selecting 'Japan' then turn on your VPN.
- Go to the game's page.
- When you see the green start up screen, turn off your VPN.
TunnelBear - Website
- Download TunnelBear.
- Create an account. After you have successfully created the account, check your e-mail for verification (check Spam folder if it's not in your Inbox).
- Log in to TunnelBear. Do not turn on the VPN yet.
- If your browser is open during the connection setup, restart it.
- Log in to DMM via this link. After it loads, go to your TunnelBear and change location by selecting 'Japan' then turn on your VPN.
- Go to the game's page.
- When you see the green start up screen, turn off your VPN.
- TunnelBear full setup review
Notes Regarding TunnelBear
- Chrome has a TunnelBear extension in its webstore so you do not need to download of the site unless you are using another browser.
- You still need to create an account which you can make through the extension.
- Verify your account. Log in to DMM via this link.
- After it loads, go to your TunnelBear and change location by selecting 'Japan' then connect to your VPN.
- Go to the game's page.
- When you see the green start up screen, turn off your VPN.
- As a free user, you have limited data per month. Make sure you turn off VPN once you log in.
Advantages[]
- Does not require the need to use region cookies as mentioned in the foremost option towards the top.
- Shows your IP address conveniently as Japanese IP address or whichever IP address that you chose.
Disadvantages[]
- It is complex to setup and may require networking knowledge to make the most of it.
- Troubleshooting when connecting via VPN may become more complex and harder to diagnose.
- It is susceptible to Man in the middle attack (MitM attack) as compromised host can render your visits to various sites be intercepted.
- It is NOT recommended to be used especially when you are handling sensitive data such as when entering your card details - see former point about MitM attack.
Option 2: HTML Page[]
Requires initial use of VPN to load the game.
Usage[]
- Use VPN to load game. Once loaded completely, save the web page as HTML only.
- Open the saved web page without VPN. If you are already logged in at DMM, it should load the game correctly.
- First time users may encounter an error page requiring you to allow access to flash. Clicking on the line of words that are coloured differently should unblock flash.
- Saved pages that haven't expired might be misused easily to bypass DMM account logins. Please remember to delete your pages after use, especially in public computers.
Advantages[]
- Minimal use of VPN at the beginning.
- Copy paste the HTML page to use elsewhere is feasible.
Disadvantages[]
- The page apart from the game looks weird.
- Clicking any links in the page will cause disconnection.
- Leaving game idle will cause disconnection.
Outdated Options[]
Option 1: Editing DMM Cookie's Region Flag[]
Due to changes in DMM's domain name, players outside of Japan using the cookie method may be locked out. This is not a recommended method to do.
Usage[]
- Go to www.dmm.com.
- Log in to your DMM account.
- Afterwards, you must switch the language of the site from English to Japanese (日本語) at the top of the site.
- Make sure the page has completely loaded. Then, open the Developer Bar (F12), copy and paste the cookie lines into the Console, and press Enter/Return.
- Go directly to the game using this link .
Cookie Lines
document.cookie = "cklg=welcome;expires=Sun, 09 Feb 2019 09:00:09 GMT;domain=.dmm.com;path=/"; document.cookie = "cklg=welcome;expires=Sun, 09 Feb 2019 09:00:09 GMT;domain=.dmm.com;path=/netgame/"; document.cookie = "cklg=welcome;expires=Sun, 09 Feb 2019 09:00:09 GMT;domain=.dmm.com;path=/netgame_s/"; document.cookie = "ckcy=1;expires=Sun, 09 Feb 2019 09:00:09 GMT;domain=.dmm.com;path=/"; document.cookie = "ckcy=1;expires=Sun, 09 Feb 2019 09:00:09 GMT;domain=.dmm.com;path=/netgame/"; document.cookie = "ckcy=1;expires=Sun, 09 Feb 2019 09:00:09 GMT;domain=.dmm.com;path=/netgame_s/";
Note: If your console returns the line "ckcy=1;expires=Sun, 09 Feb 2019 09:00:09 GMT;domain=log-netgame.dmm.com;path=/", that is normal behavior and the method should still work.
You may also use this Chrome extension to bypass the area error on DMM.
Alternate Way to Access the Console[]
If you are unable to find the Console in the Developer Bar, the following shortcuts can be used to access it instead:
- Chrome: Ctrl-Shift-J (Windows), Cmd-Opt-J (Mac)
- Firefox: Ctrl-Shift-K (Windows), Cmd-Opt-K (Mac)
- Safari: Cmd-Opt-C (Mac)
- Opera: Ctrl-Shift-I, Select 'Console' (Windows)
Advantages[]
- Works for any OS or browser
- You do not need to download or install any third-party software
- You will have access until you specifically clear your browser cookies
- It is fast since you'll be using your direct internet connection
Disadvantages[]
- Does not work for many users
How it works[]
Region cookies & How it works (From the Kantai Collection Wiki)
- With this, you are using the browser's developer tools console to write cookies on your computer. Nothing has been transmitted to the server at this point.
- Once you have refresh DMM, it will now check for the cookies. Your browser now includes these cookies as part of the HTTP header on your refresh.
- DMM will now see the new region flag on the cookies, (which they do not know you faked since it was given by your browser) and grant you access.
- Choose your netgame and have fun playing the game.
Option 2: Reverse Proxy[]
Fixes the IP of DMM sites in your computer to bypass their DNS routing.
Usage[]
- Open the hosts file in your computer using administrative privilege. (In win 7+ it should be c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts)
- The file can be edited using any text editor such as Notepad, Notepad++. Add in the following lines, then save.
106.186.27.62 www.dmm.com 106.186.27.62 www[.]dmm[.]co[.]jp 106.186.27.62 pc-play.games.dmm.com 106.186.27.62 accounts.dmm.com 106.186.27.62 games.dmm.com
- Open the game using the direct link [1]
- First timers may encounter the page asking you to change your password. If this happens, undo the changes you made in the hosts file first. Then you will need to use VPN to click the link asking you to change password, then in the subsequent page issue to your email the link to change your password. Turn off VPN while changing your password. After changing password, amend the hosts file again. You should be able to access game using the direct link.
- For more information, please check this document.
Advantages[]
- An almost permanent fix that does not require you to do anything after the initial setup.
Disadvantages[]
- Should DMM change their IP address, the whole fix would fail.
- It is susceptible to Man in the middle attack (MitM attack) as compromised host can render your visits to various sites be intercepted.
- It is NOT recommended to be used especially when you are handling sensitive data such as when entering your card details - see former point about MitM attack.
Troubleshooting[]
- If the above method does not work for you and you cannot access the game, ensure the following:
- You aren't using private browsing / incognito window
- Adobe Flash Player is enabled
- Your browser doesn't routinely clear cookies
- Your internet connection is working
- Your internet connection is not blocking DMM's API
- Your browser does not have Parental Controls on
- If you made sure these are correct and the above method still doesn't work, try some of the following:
- Refresh the page after entering the lines into the console and hitting return
- Clear cache/cookies and enter the lines into the console again
- Reinstall/update Adobe Flash Player
- Set an exception for DMM.com in your firewall
- Reset your internet connection
- Turn your computer off and on again
Other[]
- If you have already been playing for a while and the game prompts you to choose a new server, do NOT choose a new server. Simply log out and log back in so that you do not get the message again. Choosing a new server may reset all of your progress in game.
- If you have already chosen a new server:
- Attempt to reset the page and go to the direct link
- Try to log out and back in
- Reset your computer
- If the above does not work, your progress may have been deleted permanently.

HTML5 Troubleshooting[]
Follow the steps in addition to the fixes for the White Screen Problem in case your browser loaded the game page correctly but, instead:
- the game screen is black,
- the spinning white Sakura appears but game doesn't load despite refreshing or waiting,
- or game loads but runs slow or choppy
Turn software acceleration on for Chrome:
- Go to chrome://settings
- Click the + Show advanced settings button
- In the System section, ensure the Use hardware acceleration when available checkbox is checked (you'll need to relaunch Chrome for any changes to take effect)
- Go to chrome://flags
- Ensure that Disable WebGL is not activated (you'll need to relaunch Chrome for any changes to take effect)
Turn software acceleration on for Firefox[]
- Go to [ about:config ]
- Search for [ webgl.disabled ]
- Ensure that its value is false (any changes take effect immediately without relaunching Firefox)
(Like Chrome, Firefox has a Use hardware acceleration when available checkbox, in Preferences > Advanced > General > Browsing. However, unlike Chrome, Firefox does not require this checkbox to be checked for WebGL to work.)
In case none of these helped and you continue to experience issues despite your browser being tested as a working HTML5 environment, backup your passwords, bookmarks and information, uninstall Chrome/Firefox and download the latest version manually.
Addicional steps to improve performance[]
- Close down other programs that demand the use of RAM and bandwidth
- Close all other tabs or dedicate one browser for games and another for surfing the web
- In some browsers, especially Chrome, sizing down the browser window can improve performance especially if you are running an HD / FullHD screen.
